Opportunity class

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level.

These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specific ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Gifted students are those students whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following domains of human ability: intellectual, creative, social and physical.

Talented students are those whose skills are distinctly above average in one or more areas of human performance.

We host the only opportunity class in the Lithgow region and are one of 76 primary schools across New South Wales catering to gifted and talented students.

Enrolment is by application, and successful students attend the opportunity class fulltime for the duration of Years 5 and 6 at Lithgow Public School. It is a two-year placement program.

The high performing students unit administers the opportunity class placement process. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend Lithgow Public School.

Parents usually apply when the students are in Year 4. For application details, timelines and forms, please visit the NSW Department of Education website.
