Special education unit

The special education unit (known as our SEU) at Lithgow Public School provides engaging and individualised learning programs for students with disabilities and complex learning needs.

In partnership with parents and carers, therapists and external stakeholders, teachers identify personalised learning priorities for each student and develop personalised learning plans to support the achievement of each student’s goals.

Our welcoming learning environment provides students with innovative learning spaces. This includes access to technology to support each students learning and communication needs, a sensory garden providing students with a place to explore and deepen their understanding of sustainability and music program supported by the Mitchel Conservatorium.

Our inclusive educational environment enables students the opportunity to access the NSW Board of Studies curriculum with support from specialist teachers and personalised adjustments. Our qualified special education teachers and school learning support officers are dedicated to motivating students to ensure they are successful and engaged learners who reach their full potential.

We aim to develop students' social, emotional, physical, intellectual and creative skills.

We encourage and support student's participation in whole school programs with their peers. Some of these opportunities include:

  • English, mathematics, personal development, health and physical education, creative and practical arts, science, human society and its environment
  • Live Life Well (fitness) and sport carnivals
  • choir and music ensembles
  • assemblies
  • special events days
  • excursions and camps.

Lithgow Public Schools SEU currently has five support classes. This includes one class catering for students with a mild intellectual disability, and three classes catering for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or moderate intellectual disability and a multi-categorical class.
